Projects - Hemsley Orrell Partnership

New Training Ground

The Planning Application is now underway for a state of the art Premiership standard Training Ground with indoor and outdoor pitches and all facilities required of a top flight football club. HOP is engaged as Consulting Engineer on the project and look forward to helping the Seagulls maintain their inexorable rise to Premiership football.

With a fabulous start to the season and an even more fabulous HOP designed AMEX Community Stadium the Seagulls have made their Premiership aspirations quite clear. As part of this HOP are engaged to design a state of the art, extendable to full size, undercover training ground. It is hoped to start work in early 2012. These new training facilities will be essential in attracting the best footballing talent and training the stars of tomorrow.

Northbrook College

HOP worked on initial scheme designs producing a number of reinforced concrete frame options for pricing. Produced the calculation package for the project, including the design of the RC main building (designed using FEM plate), a glazed steel frame atrium and single storey masonry building.

The project includes a steel framed viewing platform which cantilevers over a Green Roofed Sustainability Classroom together with a new feature mesh screen entrance structure linking the existing and new buildings.

East Cowes

East Cowes

Due to our emphasis of producing high quality work on time, HOP proudly maintain a number of repeat clients. The residential site at East Cowes for Barratt required production of civil and structural design within a very tight timescale.

The site included 180 units comprising 1,2, & 3 bedroom flats and 2 and 3 bedroom terraced, semi-detached and detached houses, with associated access and landscaping.

Varley Halls, University of Brighton

Varley Halls, University of Brighton

HOP provided both Structural and Civil Engineering design input on Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Varley Halls for the design and build contractor, Leadbitter. This £14m phase included a 5-storey mixed use Hub building, housing both student services and residential accommodation, together with two 3-storey ‘Woodland’ residential buildings and the new energy centre which houses all the site major M&E plant for CHP.

Marine Civils Focus

HOP has particular experience and expertise in coastal buildings and maritime works. Current interesting projects include:

  • The refurbishment of Cromer and Southend Piers
  • Underwater repairs to Brighton Pier
  • New Fishing quay at Newhaven Harbour
Local fishing seems to be improving in the seas around Newhaven and HOP are commissioned to design a new fishing boat landing stage and wet fish storage area. Buildability is an important factor in this challenging environment with mobile river mud, future dredging needs, relatively high tidal range and fast river currents. HOP’s building information modelling using Autocad Revit is fully compatible with Autocad Civils 3D and enabled a number of options to be easily explored and engage with the key users to demonstrate advantages of the various different schemes.
  • New Heavy Duty Berth at Newhaven Harbour
  • Mega storage sheds at Shoreham Harbour

Bridges in Nepal

As part of our project collaboration with ReidSteel, we are very pleased to have provided a Category 2 check for two of ReidSteel’s innovative arch span bridges for crossing ravines in Nepal.

ReidSteel have some great ideas on erection of long span structures, particularly in difficult locations like this where most of the steelwork has to be manhandled into position: access by a suitable crane is just not possible.  More is on ReidSteel’s website www.reidsteel.co.uk

Hackney Marsh Bridges

Hackney Marsh BridgesAgain, in conjunction with Webb Yates, HOP are undertaking site investigation works and design elements for two bridges from one of London’s Olympic Boroughs through to new sports facilities. We are also acting as CDM Coordinator on this very interesting job, which entails replacement of the existing road and footbridge (with many major service crossings) and a brand new, inspiringly modern design long-span footbridge.

Ex-Blue Circle Cement Works, Bromley Common, Kent

Barratt’s, KentThis brand new development comprises of 536 dwelling units, divided over primarily houses together with a focal boulevard and vista apartment blocks. HOP have been engaged to provide the structural engineering and foundation design, which has been impacted by surface contamination and fly-tipping and plastic clay soils.

Northern Racing National Racecourses

Tripoli, LibyaHOP is very pleased to be engaged by Northern Racing on all of their 11 prime horse racing courses throughout the UK. We are involved in annual certification and also general upkeep, repairs and other work. We also celebrated our 25th anniversary with a ‘day at the races’ at the last meeting of the season at Brighton – much fun was had by all!

Sussex County Cricket Club

Sussex County Cricket ClubHOP are the Structural and Civil Engineer for the redevelopment of the Hove County Ground. This is a complex development worth approximately £7m, involving alterations to the existing pavilion and cricket score and provision of new groundsmen, hospitality, media and ground management facilities and two new stands, incorporating food retail and spectator facilities. In addition, the project was carried out in two successive winter breaks between playing seasons.

AMEX Community Stadium

AMEX Community Stadium

After helping move Brighton & Hove Albion to their temporary home at Withdean in 1999, HOP are now enjoying championship action in the HOP designed Amex stadium.

Over the 11 years at Withdean, HOP have been a match sponsor in every single year and are proud to say unbeaten; HOP guests have never seen the Albion lose! Let’s hope we can continue this form in the Championship at the Amex.

Richborough Energy Park

Richborough Energy Park

HOP is engaged as Consulting Engineer responsible for Civil Engineering and early stage Structural planning of interlinked sites on the former Richborough Power Station in Ramsgate. This is a receiving centre for Thanet Offshore Wind, possible site of a new energy plant, gasification facility and recycling centre.

Site Acquisition hits the right chord with developers

Our Site Acquisition service has hit the right chord with developers, housebuilders and other clients. HOP give presentations on this around the south and provide a specific pre-acquisition service to look at all the potential problems on a site before detailed surveys or the purchase process itself is put in hand. This can identify key problems early, saving wasted time and money, but may often present a different angle to a potential developer, often giving better returns..."Time spent on reconnaissance is time well spent"

HOP Scoops Engineering Innovation Award

  • HOP Civil Engineers are very pleased to have won the Institution of Civil Engineers (South) Geoffrey Osborne Award for Innovation presented by the then President of our Institution, Dr Jean Venables, on 19 June at the ICE South Awards Dinner.

This was for the civil engineering design of the roads and permeable paving drainage for the new school access, car park and sports court at Hurstpierpoint College, incorporating reduced flood risk by using Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS).

The judges said that “... it was clear that the project paid a lot of attention to overcome problems to an exceptionally high innovative standard ... a number of exceptional innovative solutions ...”.

We have very strong Highways, Flood Risk, Marine and Civil Engineering teams here at HOP able to offer engineering advice for feasibility and planning applications through to construction stage.

Our Civil Engineering teams have been quietly getting on with things like this for approaching 10 years now, so it’s nice to get a bit of recognition.
  • AMEX Community Stadium - The Structural Steel Design Awards 2011 sponsored by Tata Steel and The British Constructional Steelwork Association – HOP were presented with a certificate as Concept Designers for the American Express Community Stadium, Brighton, which received an Award for the high standard of design achieved.
  • LEMO Building – HOP receives prestigious South East region Local Authority Building Control Award for Best Commercial Development

HOP gives practical, economic engineering solutions on time and with attention to detail.

We work throughout the UK and nearby Europe and we pride ourselves on our learning and training opportunities within the organisation.

We are happy to give early, often informal involvement and respond quickly... Why not get in touch...
