BHAFC Match Sponsors

Posted on the 24th March 2017

HOP are proud to have supported BHAFC since their first match at Withdean stadium and every season since then. We continued our support through their move to the AMEX Stadium in 2011. It was a real honour to have assisted the club in parts of the initial Planning Application as lead Civil & Structural Engineers on this great project, to realise the AMEX as it stands today.

March 10th was HOP’s 16th consecutive season as match sponsors. With the Seagulls flying high in the championship, the 3-0 victory over Derby County was a fantastic result, and one HOP was proud to be a part of. It was with great honour to present man of the match to Jiri Skalak for his hard work, flair and industry on his return to the team’s starting line-up.

Practical Skills for Construction

Posted on the 13th February 2017

Practical Skills for Construction was a week long course organised and ran by HOP to help those who wanted to get into the Construction Industry, but had not had the opportunity to experience the practicalities of some of the work involved, nor, importantly, had the opportunity to study for their CSCS card.

The week was packed full of various learning opportunities, workshops, interesting site visits including the Palace Pier and Shoreham Port and outdoor activities.

It is great to hear of the success stories from those entering fulltime employment as a result of the week. A big thank you must go to all those that made such a project, a reality.

HOP charity support

Posted on the 13th February 2017

HOP is proud to support Whoopsadaisy; a local charity which gives help, advice and education to children with cerebral palsy and similar motor disorders, helping them and their carers live independent lives.

We have helped to move them in to their current premises at the Whoopsadaisy Pavilion, preparing initial surveys of the building, submitting and managing Planning Application and organising building work to restore the previously derelict building.

In recent years, we have continued to assist the Charity wherever possible, by helping out at events, raising sponsorship money and offering our services free of charge if any works to their new premises are required.

Want to work in Construction

Posted on the 13th February 2017

In April 2013 after 6 months preparation, we launched the “Want to Work in Construction” initiative. This was held at the AMEX Community Stadium in association with our founding partner, Ed Allison-Wright of Centurion Group and assisted by City College Brighton & Hove and Albion in the Community, the charitable arm of Brighton & Hove Football Club.

Over a period of 5 days, people not currently in employment listened to short masterclasses on how practicing construction professionals had got where they are and some of the things they had achieved in their working life.

Eminent professionals included: Andy Simons, the Architect of the AMEX Stadium; the current Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers; a representative of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors; and a Land Surveyor, Simon Ellis, complete with all his electronic instruments.

Marine Team Sewers Tour

Posted on the 10th February 2017

On Wed. 17th Aug. the Marine Team departed on a tour of the 150 year old, Victorian built, Brighton Sewers. Millions of bricks were used to form the miles of sewers required to manage the waste from Brighton, which was previous stored in Cesspools at the back of properties. Originally the sewers were designed to allow the sea to flow into them and ‘flush’ them out at high tide, however these days, the waste is sent to a cleansing plant at Peacehaven.

The sewers were engineered for a 500 year design life, and it’s a good job, as the Population has increased from 90,000 in 1871 to 270,000 in 2011.

The tour served as a reminder that the projects HOP Design and Engineer, could have both practical and historical significance for future generations.

HOP on Grand Designs

Posted on the 10th February 2017

Signatory Architect, Alan Phillips selected HOP for a particularly unique site in Croyde on the North Devon coastline.

Set high above the sea and right on the edge of the cliffs, both the permanent and temporary design were a real challenge.   This caught the attention of Kevin McCloud and the Grand Designs Team, who have been following the project throughout.

The Grand Design Team first visited our offices in Hove, to see how HOP work. They then invited Jon O to site to meet Kevin, and discuss some of the challenges that were faced, including constructing curved buildings on the edge of a receding coastline, with especially difficult access.

Engineering Education Scheme

Posted on the 7th February 2017

Under the EES scheme a team of four year 12 students from Hurstpierpoint College have been working with HOP on a project aimed at building a better amphibious home. The 6th form students had to design a hull system for an amphibious home that would solve many of the problems facing current homes that can float, making them easier to market in the future. The students presented their results at a Celebration and Assessment Day at the University of Brighton on 16th April 2015 and were delighted to hear that they had been shortlisted for the National Finals.

HOP advise on the setting up of and now Chair the Industrial Advisory Board comprising of 6 senior academics and 6 senior members of industry drawn from contractors, consultant and client bodies. Current successes so far have been:

  • Introducing BIM into the curriculum and arranging it so that Civil Engineering students can graduate fully fledged and site ready with a CSCS card (Health & Safety trained) as part of their curriculum and studies.
  • With great input from Mackley Construction HOP have arranged some very interesting site visits for both staff and students to places like the i360 and other constructions on Brighton seafront.

Brighton Seafront

Posted on the 7th February 2017

HOP are Project Managers under the NEC contract for the fabulous i360 rising on Brighton seafront. We also have undertaken all the works to the existing Arches, Highway Works, structural design and detailing. HOP designed the temporary landing stage construction on the beach from gabions and shingle to bring in the ‘cans’ and other heavy equipment.

Following on from this, HOP are appointed as designers on the new West Street Shelter, the largest seafront building to be built by Brighton & Hove City Council for many years. This involves a new sea wall, beach level roadway, alterations to the main A259 and a new multi-purpose building on the seafront.

HOP are working with renowned EPS and moulding specialist, Cordek, on development of a new fast flooring system which minimises the use of structural concrete. It automatically provides insulation and other benefits and reduces the number of operations and its time on site. First pilot project was in June 2015.
