Victoria Fountain

Victoria Fountain is one of Brighton’s many historic landmarks, protected as a Grade II listed structure with a captivating history behind it. The 32ft, three-tiered fountain features a large cast-iron pool with three intertwined dolphins supported by sandstone blocks.

The project team worked closely with Brighton & Hove City Council to restore this important Victorian landmark.

HOP have provided Structural engineering services for the dismantling, refurbishment and reconstruction of the fountain, restoring the Grade II listed landmark back to its former glory.

The fountain was re-engineered by:

  • Constructing a temporary works design
  • Assessing the existing stability and condition of the fountain before entering the reconstruction stage
  • Re-engineering of the cast iron through the fountain to ensure it was straight and true
  • Designing a new concrete base for the fountain

The restoration of Victoria Fountain subsequently won the IStructE Refurbishment Award in March 2024.
